An introduction to how we support children’s health by supporting healthy skin!
The skin, the largest organ of the body, plays a vital role in supporting many essential functions. In childhood, it plays a particularly important role in growth and development. The health and function of the skin can help or hinder children’s overall health and well-being. As a board-certified dermatologist, Dr. Huayi Zhang is well-equipped with the expertise and onsite capabilities to prevent and manage pediatric skin conditions during these critical formative years, which sets the tone for the rest of our young patients’ lives.
Do you treat children of all ages?
Dr. Zhang of Bluebonnet Dermatology treats children aged 8 years and older.
What conditions do you treat?
Some of the most common conditions in children, adolescents, and teens include acne, birthmarks, keratosis pilaris, moles, warts, psoriasis, eczema, rosacea, and vitiligo. Many of these conditions have shared symptoms. For this reason, it is critical to turn to a specialist like Dr. Zhang. She possesses the expertise and technology to accurately diagnose common skin issues, such as red inflammation or rashes. If not addressed, these concerns may escalate.
So, these conditions will not go away on their own?
Of course, experiences vary depending on the underlying cause or condition. But, generally, many disorders and anomalies that affect the skin never go away completely without a little specialized help. You may notice that your child’s irritation or other concern may subside for a bit, only to flare up later. It’s important for us to, in turn, determine the “triggers” for such flares. That way, we can address them properly. Some conditions tend to get better on their own as your child ages; however, with our wide range of techniques, treatments, and guidance on medications and skin care, children do not have to experience the discomfort and embarrassment associated with skin troubles needlessly. We believe in protecting the skin and staying one step ahead of the condition rather than playing catch-up with treatment whenever possible.
Are some of these conditions contagious?
Of the many conditions listed above, warts can be passed from person to person or from a surface to a person. Additionally, warts may spread from one part of your child’s body to another. These common skin issues in children emphasize the importance of seeking timely professional dermatological care to help prevent the spread of highly contagious growths. With warts, HPV (human papillomavirus) is to blame. Approximately 10% to 20% of the world’s school-aged children have them.
How do you control warts?
Treatments for warts and other conditions at the office of Bluebonnet Dermatology in McKinney, Texas, are largely divided into OTC products, prescription medications, and in-house therapies. Often, topical products Dr. Zhang recommends may be on the “front lines” of treatment. Doctors may prescribe stronger medical-grade products or medications if those products do not work. We can also recommend treatments performed at our office. For example, we may administer cryotherapy to “freeze off” the wart or HPV-infected tissue with liquid nitrogen. Sometimes, therapies and medications are also combined to get the best results.
