Specialty care to effectively treat even the most challenging scars

Bluebonnet Dermatology understands that every scar has a story. Our Board-certified dermatologist, Dr. Huayi Zhang, knows that scars can be reminders of past painful sicknesses, diseases, and injuries. Dr. Zhang knows you want them gone and has the considerable specialist dermatology training and experience to put these painful memories behind you once and for all by safely and predictably eliminating scars. Effective treatments at our office in McKinney, Texas, cater to patients in the community, including Allen, Plano, Frisco, Princeton, Prosper, Fairview, Lucas, and Anna. Our team begins by evaluating your scar and considering various factors to provide the most suitable recommendation for you. For instance, raised or hypertrophic scars (like keloids) require different care than depressed scars.

What are keloids?

All scars generally arise due to past trauma. As your body heals, it produces more tissue. When your body produces too much collagen during this process, it can lead to an overgrowth of tissue – or hypertrophic or raised scars that stick out above the surrounding skin’s surface. Likewise, when too little collagen is produced, there may be an insufficient amount of tissue. A depressed area that is lower than the surrounding surface of the skin can arise. These scars are known as “atrophic” and are often associated with acne and chickenpox.

How do keloids compare to other raised scars?

Keloids can be particularly noticeable as they tend to grow beyond the initial site of injury. From a cosmetic perspective, they can be very hard to miss. But the complications do not stop there. If keloids go untreated, they can enlarge and interfere with normal range of motion and movement. These scars also tend to hurt and itch as they expand.

Do they always need treatment?

This represents yet another way that keloids differ from other raised scars. Whereas other hypertrophic scars can get better on their own, keloids will almost always require some type of treatment. Since they can be challenging to treat, it is imperative to consult with and turn to a highly qualified and experienced specialist in diagnosing and treating skin conditions like Dr. Zhang.

How do you treat keloids?

Treatment can vary from patient to patient. All treatments start with a consultation at our office in McKinney. During your visit, Dr. Zhang will take a close look at your scarring and also rule out other growths that can resemble keloids (and would, in turn, require a different type of treatment). Depending on the location, size, and other features of your scars, she may recommend using injectable steroids and medications to aid in flattening out the raised area of the skin. These medications also help to ease any discomfort and itching that can accompany a growing keloid. Cryotherapy or “freezing” off the scar with liquid nitrogen may be appropriate. Surgical excision or removal is generally indicated when other therapies haven’t worked.
