An appealing procedure to renew tired, aged skin … chemical peels!

Our skin is exposed to numerous threats, from harmful UV radiation from the sun’s rays to other environmental and day-to-day stressors. Of course, changes occur deep within our skin as aging and the effects of gravity take their toll. UV light and other extrinsic factors may hasten intrinsic or deep-seated changes to the structural components of our skin. We may begin to look older than our chronological age. But our board-certified dermatologist, Dr. Huayi Zhang, can help you to rediscover your healthiest-looking, most youthful, and radiant skin with chemical peels.

What are chemical peels ?

Peels are a versatile treatment at Bluebonnet Dermatology in McKinney, Texas. While they come in many different forms, this treatment category works the same regardless of “peel type” or formulation; a special and tailored solution is applied to the skin to gently exfoliate or remove the outermost damaged layer or epidermis. This process helps to encourage new, fresh skin cells, so your skin looks and feels better.

So, are not all peels the same ?

No. Many peels may be considered. Some peels are deeper than others, depending on the formulation recommended to address your specific skin concerns, and that is best for your skin type. Formulations may vary in terms of the specific ingredients used as well as how concentrated these active ingredients are (more concentrated formulations are generally more powerful and may be best for certain skin concerns and skin types).

What do you consider ?

Aside from skin type, Dr. Zhang will also assess the nature and severity of your skin concern, as well as factors such as your medical history, current medications and supplements, lifestyle behaviors and habits, and goals.

What peel might be best for me ?

Once she gets to know you and your skin better, she may recommend lighter or deeper peels. Light or superficial peels may be right for you if you have mild signs of aging and sun damage, such as dry and leathery skin, brown spots, or hyperpigmentation. For more moderate pigment concerns, acne scars, lines and wrinkles, and even precancerous growths or AKs (actinic keratosis), deeper peels may be in your future. These peels penetrate more deeply into the epidermis.

What can I expect from treatment ?

The specific experience and results are dependent on the type of peel that is applied to your skin. For instance, lighter peels are tolerable and appropriate for all skin types. They are considered true “lunchtime peels” because you can return to your busy day after treatment without downtime. However, repeated peels are typically needed to get the desired results. Deeper peels can get dramatic results for even more severe skin concerns. Still, they are also associated with redness, swelling, crusting, and more demands on your time and body for healing and recovery. Unlike med-spas or other offices providing skin treatments, when you visit Bluebonnet Dermatology, you are under the care of a board-certified medical dermatologist who has trained for years to treat the skin. We know skin because this is all we do!
